  What is NPI?
NPI stands for National Provider Identifier and must be used in standard electronic and paper-based healthcare transactions, specified by HIPAA. The identifier helps to ensure that medical claims are processed on time and payments are made correctly. The NPI is a 10-digit, numeric identifier that does not expire or change, and is administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The CMS 1500 Claim Form (HCFA) is changing to accommodate NPIs and the old HCFA Claim Form will no longer be accepted.
